and oh-so effective.

meet spongey.

He represents your skin! That’s because, your skin is like a sponge. Everything you encounter is soaked right up through your skin. He’s going to show you how the chemicals in most household products can have a harsh effect on your body.

Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES)

Their Way

Many personal care products contain a potentially harmful detergent called Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES). It’s frequently contaminated with 1,4 dioxane. Shockingly 1,4 dioxane will never appear on the ingredient labels of the companies that use it!

The Nature Clean® Way

No thanks, Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES)! In our products, we use Poly Glucosides which are a group of naturally derived ingredients called surfactants. These ingredients are created from the fermentation process of mixing the sugar of corn starch with vegetable oil.

Synthetic Perfumes & Fragrances
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR SPONGEY?
Dyes in cleaning products can be ingested, and absorbed through the skin and can be irritating to your eyes.

Their Way

You may want to cover your eyes, or at least plug your nose at this next one. Many products get their scents with the help of synthetic perfumes, fragrances and dyes. These fragrances are made of thousands of chemicals that have not been evaluated for toxicity. Many of these unlisted ingredients are irritants that can trigger allergies, migraines and asthma symptoms.

The Nature Clean® Way

Fancy scents don’t make sense. All Nature Clean® products use natural food flavours, plant-based fragrances, and essential oils. We even offer a completely unscented and colour-free option for each category of products we produce. Compared to the other guys, our products are truly a breath of fresh, non-toxic air.

Optical Brighteners

Their Way

You know those commercials that show blue detergent keeping your white clothes whiter? Those products contain chemicals known as optical brighteners. They make laundered clothes appear to be ‘whiter’ but what these commercials DON’T mention, is that they remain on your clothes which can cause allergic reactions.

The Nature Clean® Way

We brighten without the nasty brighteners. To keep your whites looking white, we use Hydrogen Peroxide (Oxygenated Bleach) which is extremely environmentally safe. Simple, right?

Synthetic Dyes

Their Way

Many companies use synthetic dyes to make products more appealing to consumers. The processes used to make these dyes, however, can add other chemicals that are potentially harmful to our health, even cancer causing... what’s so appealing about that?

The Nature Clean® Way

Colours and synthetic dyes add absolutely nothing to the performance of a product. We keep our products free of all dyes and colourants. They look exactly how they should...natural! Some of our products may even appear to be coloured, but that’s just how the recipe turns out. There’s no dyes and no synthetic colours allowed in Spongey’s kitchen!

Preservatives
The good, the bad
and the truth.

The truth is, some natural cleaning products need preservatives or they develop bad odours and lose their efficacy.

Their Way

Other natural products must use preservatives, as well, but do not disclose what they use or how much.

We also only use the bare minimum necessary - 0.001% of total volume. That being said, we’re working to have a new preserving method in place by the end of this year.

The Nature Clean® Way

Nature Clean® uses the maximum amount of naturally derived ingredients. We avoid any chemical that may be a suspected carcinogen. We believe that very effective products can be created without chemicals that could harm us.

The Nature Clean® Way

No thanks Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate! In our products we only use naturally derived mild surfactants/cleanser from vegetable oil that are "Palm Oil Free" vegetable oil.

Petroleum Solvents

Their Way

You don’t want Petroleum Solvents as a guest in your home. These by-products are used in cleaning products, like laundry detergents and heavy cleaners, giving rise to both health and environmental concerns. The European Union classifies Petroleum Distillates as a carcinogen, meaning it is suspected to cause cancer.

The Nature Clean® Way

We take the natural route instead. Our products contain Poly Glucosides, which are a group of naturally derived ingredients created from the fermentation process of mixing the sugar of corn starch with vegetable oil. We use these ingredients to enhance the formation of foams in detergents for dishwashing and for delicate fabrics.

Alcohol Ethoxylates (PEGs)
NOTE TO SELF:
Ethoxylated "eth"
ingredients - Bad
EG: Sodium Laureth
Sulfate

Their Way

Alcohol Ethoxylates… what a mouthful. These are nonionic surfactants found in some surface cleaners and body wash. They are frequently contaminated with 1,4 dioxane (a probable human carcinogen). What is especially concerning is that 1,4 dioxane and ethylene oxide will never appear on the ingredient labels of the companies that use these chemicals.

The Nature Clean® Way

We like to keep things really clean and simple. That’s why we use Poly Glucosides. It’s really just a fancy name for a group of naturally derived ingredients that are created from the fermentation process of mixing the sugar of corn starch with vegetable oil. These ingredients are called ‘surfactants.’ Again, another fancy way of saying they help enhance the formation of foams in detergents for dishwashing and for delicate fabrics.

Parabens

Their Way

Parabens are used as a preservative. However, they disrupt hormone function and can be linked to an increased risk of breast cancer, reproductive fertility, early puberty in children and early menopause in women.

At Nature Clean®
we diligently investigate
healthier alternative
preservatives for our products.

The Nature Clean® Way

Our products are 100% Paraben Free. But we still need preservatives to keep away nasty bacteria. However, our preservatives are much kinder and gentler. To preserve and maintain effectiveness in our shampoo and body wash, we use Phenexyethanol and Sodium Benzoate. And Ethylhexylglycerin & Phenoxyethanol in our conditioner. We know what you’re thinking, these aren’t exactly the words you want to hear in a spelling bee.

Silicone

Their Way

Silicones are found in a lot of hair and skin care products on the market today. While they may leave hair and skin with a soft and silky feeling unfortunately they can be an environmental hazard! Silicones can be bioaccumulative. That’s one big word meaning they can work their way up the food chain....to us! When washed off your face and skin, silicones can accumulate and pose a risk to aquatic organisms, which get eaten by larger critters and can eventually make their way to our plates. There’s nothing tasty about that!

The Nature Clean® Way

Sorry, Silicones! In our products, we use Guar Gum from guar bean, Babassu Oil, and Coco-Caprylate which is derived from coconut oil.
